Experience the Enchantment: The Charles Bridge Egg Legend Takes Center Stage in a Medieval Parade!

The captivating tale linked to Prague’s iconic Charles Bridge is set to come alive once again.

The Vajíčkobraní, an enchanting medieval parade featuring peasants in costumes as they transport a cartful of boiled eggs from the town of Velvary to the mayor of Prague, is scheduled for April 13 at 13:00.

In line with tradition, the engineers who designed the bridge decided to incorporate eggs, milk, and wine into the mortar mix to enhance the bridge’s strength (similar to how raw eggs are used in meatballs to make them firmer).

As there weren’t enough eggs available in Prague, all cities from Bohemia and Moravia were asked to contribute. This request led to some confusion, resulting in various towns mistakenly sending cheese and cottage cheese.

The inhabitants of Velvary thoughtfully sent the eggs already hard-boiled to prevent any breakage during their journey to Prague, a decision that ultimately marked their place in history, albeit not without facing mockery and scorn from the residents of Prague.

A recent study conducted at the laboratory of the Institute of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Chemical Technology revealed that the tale of eggs being mixed into the mortar for the Charles Bridge is grounded in reality.

Štepánka Kučková from the University of Chemistry and Technology stated that the findings indicated the presence of egg proteins in the original mortar. This practice was not unique to the construction of the Charles Bridge; during the Middle Ages, builders frequently utilized various substances, including milk, curd, ox blood, bile, and even beer and wine, to either strengthen or modify the consistency of mortar used in buildings.

The parade will kick off at 13:00 starting from the Malostranská tower. The current mayor of Velvary, Radim Volak, will also be in attendance.

The Charles Bridge Museum is responsible for organizing this event. Their aim is to revive and preserve Prague’s rich historical traditions while keeping locals informed about the fascinating stories of old Prague.

On this special day, visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the Easter exhibition hosted at the Charles Bridge Museum.
