Zoo Jihlava Enhances Animal Disease Safety Protocols While Celebrating Bird Day

Zoo Jihlava is kindly requesting its visitors to help by adhering to the guidelines put in place to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. Even with these restrictions, the zoo is still open, and all scheduled events will take place as planned. On Saturday, April 5 in 2025, the zoo will celebrate its traditional Bird Day. The bird of the year will be the Mountain Plover, and everyone with the names Konipas and Konipasek can attend this day for free! Additionally, other individuals with bird-related last names can enjoy a 50% discount on zoo admission and will have a chance to enter a drawing for birdhouses and various ornithological prizes. All guests are welcome to participate in activities such as making birdhouses, playing bird-themed games, and creating bird-inspired crafts.
In light of the current situation and the potential risk of infection from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), Zoo Jihlava is implementing safety measures to protect its animals. New disinfection mats have been placed at the entrance, significantly reducing the chance of spreading infection and safeguarding the animals’ health. Until further notice, feeding and petting of sheep and goats is strictly prohibited, which includes closing their contact area to visitors. Additionally, the sale and usage of vouchers for animal interaction programs have been temporarily halted, though any previously purchased vouchers will be automatically valid for an extended period. Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral illness affecting cloven-hoofed animals, spreading through direct contact with infected animals, contaminated objects, and even airborne transmission over considerable distances. While this disease does not affect humans, the virus can linger on clothing and footwear for as long as 48 hours;
