New Prague District Honors Renowned Thinkers with Special Tribute

The streets and green spaces in Rohan City, a burgeoning district being developed along Rohanské nábřeží in Prague’s Karlín area, will pay homage to distinguished philosophers from both Czechia and various countries around the world.

A new plaza, destined to become the area’s focal point, will be named after the esteemed French philosopher Simone Weil, who is recognized as one of the most significant thinkers of the 20th century.

A Salute to Exceptional Thinkers

The Sekyra Group, the visionary developer behind Rohan City, is at the forefront of one of the most ambitious urban redevelopment initiatives in Prague. The founder of the company, Luďek Sekyra, proposed naming the new streets as a tribute to well-known philosophers who have profoundly impacted moral and political theory.

“I am delighted that our initiative to honor notable Czech and Western philosophers has received support. These figures have significantly contributed to the development of our civilization, influencing key discussions surrounding values, freedom, morality, and justice through both their scholarly work and personal beliefs,” stated Luďek Sekyra.

Notable Names in Karlín

The streets running parallel to Rohanský nábřeží, which borders the Rohan City development, will be named after philosophers such as J. L. Fischer, Jan Sokol, Immanuel Kant, Jacques Derrida, John Stuart Mill, and Roger Scruton, who were celebrated advocates of local dissent.

The streets that intersect them will honor figures including Emmanuel Levinas, Radim Palouš, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Edmund Husserl, Rudolf Carnap, Erazim Kohák, Ladislav Hejdánek, and Thomas Hobbes, in addition to businessman Vlastimil Zátka.

The parks in the area will also be named after influential philosophers. The park situated closest to the Vltava River will carry the name Locke’s Park, paying tribute to the English champion of freedom and tolerance, John Locke. A neighboring park will honor Derek Parfit, a respected British moral philosopher.

The proposed new square in Rohan City is to be named after Simone Weil, a notable French philosopher and social activist.

Residences and Offices by Famous Architects

The initial phase of the Rohan City venture, which commenced in 2021, has successfully delivered 220 residential units distributed across four distinct buildings. Two of these buildings, named Diamanty Karlín, were designed by esteemed architects Eva Jiřičná and Petr Vágner from AI-DESIGN. The remaining two buildings, Riviéra Karlín, were created by architects associated with EBM Expert.

This district will also include two office buildings: the Arché building, designed by Jiřičná and Vágner, and the A2 building created by Jakub Cigler. The Arché building, which was originally named A1, now serves as the headquarters for the Sekyra Group.

A School and Community Spaces

In addition to residential and office spaces, Rohan City will feature cafes, retail shops, sports facilities, and lush green areas.

A new educational institution is also on the agenda, projected to be completed by mid-2029. This school will be developed in partnership with Prague 8 and the city of Prague, situated near Carnapová, Millová, and Koháková streets, conveniently located next to a bicycle path.
