Prague: The Top Pick for Czech Tourists

For the third year in a row in 2024, Prague has been the number one holiday destination for Czech tourists, beating other popular regions such as South Bohemia, South Moravia, and Hradec Kralové.

Growing Local Appeal

František Cipro, chairman of Prague City Tourism (PCT), explains that Prague’s image among local travelers is improving. One effective strategy is the distribution of vouchers in hotels, which offer discounts for visiting major attractions like the zoo and Prague Castle. This initiative not only encourages more locals to explore the city but also builds a sense of community pride.

Changing Tourist Behaviors

The shift in travel habits isn’t limited to domestic visitors. Foreign tourists are also exploring beyond Prague’s center, thanks to travel recommendations shared on social media. Instead of concentrating in the downtown area, many now visit cultural sites such as the Žižkov Tower, DOX gallery, National Gallery, and Vyšehrad. This indicates that visitors are increasingly interested in the city’s cultural offerings rather than just its nightlife.

Consistent Favorite Among Locals

“For the third year, Prague tops the list of domestic tourist destinations. Previously, the South Moravian and South Bohemian Regions alternated in this spot. About one-fifth of domestic visitors now choose Prague, and we couldn’t be happier,” Cipro stated. He also noted that these visitors, familiar with local customs and rules, contribute positively to the city even if they tend to spend less compared to tourists from other countries.

Impact of the Pandemic and Promotional Campaigns

The COVID-19 pandemic played a role in reshaping Prague’s reputation. Many Czechs who once considered the city too expensive discovered its charm during the pandemic. The “At Home in Prague” campaign, launched by PCT, successfully encouraged locals to explore their own city by offering an easy-to-use voucher system at hotels. This approach has made a lasting impact on how Prague is viewed by domestic travelers.

Shifting Preferences Among Younger Visitors

While younger visitors traditionally came to Prague for its affordable beer and vibrant nightlife, recent trends show a change. A survey by Czech Tourism among young Britons revealed that alcohol is no longer the main draw. Instead, factors such as gastronomy, monuments, and architecture have become more important. This shift in preferences has even led to a decline in beer tours in Prague, with such tours now more popular in the Baltic countries.
