Step into Adventure: Discover the Koněprus Caves This Season

Koněprus CavesThe main season for visiting the caves will officially kick off next weekend, but on this Saturday, March 29, 2025, you are invited to explore the Koněprus Caves located in the Beroun region, as part of the Spring Awakening at the House of Nature in the Bohemian Karst.

The opening event for the season at the Koněprus Caves, often referred to as the Golden Horse in the Bohemian Karst, is set to take place on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a fantastic opportunity to be among the first visitors of the year to the caves and to join in the celebration of the first anniversary of the House of Nature of the Bohemian Karst through interactive activities led by speleologists. The House of Nature, which opened last year, not only features extensive outdoor displays but also an engaging indoor exhibit that showcases the nature and history of the Bohemian Karst.

For parents with children, there will be a special program called “Nature Trail a Little Differently“. Until 2:00 p.m., families can pick up a worksheet at the ticket office of the House of Nature and embark on an exciting adventure with a trilobite named Vendelin. They will be able to solve riddles along the way and earn a small reward. Additionally, tours of the karst underground at Koněprusy will continue on the final two days of March, specifically on Sunday and Monday.

Koněprus CavesThe Koněprus Caves rank as the second most visited out of the fourteen caves that are open to the public under the management of SJ ČR. They are situated in Central Bohemia, just 7 km south of Beroun, within the protected area of the Bohemian Karst Protected Landscape Area, close to the historic castles of Křivoklát and Karlštejn. These caves were formed in Devonian limestone that dates back around 410 million years. They were discovered in 1950 and became accessible to the public in 1958. The main tour circuit stretches out 620 meters and attracts roughly 100,000 visitors every year. The Koněprus Caves consist of three distinct height levels that cover a total length of 2,050 meters, showcasing a height difference of over 70 meters. They hold the title of the largest cave system in Bohemia and feature breathtaking stalactite formations alongside extremely important paleontological and archaeological deposits. Within the upper level lies a 15th-century secret money-lending workshop, adding to the historical intrigue. The caves are renowned for their unique opalescent decorations and paleontological discoveries, which provide insight into the evolution of nature over the last 1.5 million years;
