Discover Prague’s Hidden Gem: Europe’s Stunning Second-Best Garden Awaits!

Prague is the setting for one of the most beautiful gardens in Europe: the Vrtba Garden, a remarkable Baroque creation located in Malá Strana.

The Vrtba Garden (Vrtbovská zahrada) earned recognition in the international Garden Awards contest as the 2nd most magnificent garden in Europe for the years 2019 and 2020.

However, despite its esteemed status, numerous individuals pass by its entrance on Karmelitská Street without realizing the serene sanctuary that lies just beyond the gates.

This enchanting garden dates back to the early 18th century and showcases a blend of classic Baroque architecture alongside modern renovations that have preserved its beauty.

Upon entering, guests are welcomed by artfully arranged terraces, but the most breathtaking experience awaits them at the very top.

Ascending to the garden’s highest point unveils an extraordinary panoramic vista of Prague, featuring iconic landmarks such as Prague Castle, St. Vitus Cathedral, St. Nicholas Church, and even a picturesque view of the Charles Bridge tower.

The Story Behind Its Name

The garden derives its name from the Vrtbovský Palace, which was once owned by the noble Counts of Vrtba, who hailed from the Pilsen area. It was the vision of Jan Josef of Vrtba who initiated the construction of the garden over 300 years ago, enhancing the hillside into a beautifully balanced landscape.

Art and Design in a Concealed Paradise

Although the garden features a steep elevation of 15 meters, the architects brilliantly linked the different levels with well-placed staircases, creating a smooth and scenic journey through the grounds.

The garden also showcases sculptures by Matyáš Bernard Braun, one of the most celebrated Baroque sculptors from Bohemia, known for his works that can also be admired at Kuks Castle. Additionally, vibrant frescoes grace the garden’s walls, enriching its artistic appeal even further.

Due to its unobtrusive entrance, this hidden gem is often overlooked by both locals and tourists. Nevertheless, twice a year, the Vrtbovská Garden is transformed into a spectacular sight. In the spring and autumn seasons, a special illumination event casts a magical glow over the garden for just two evenings.

While the exact date for this year’s spring illumination is still to be confirmed, it traditionally occurs in early April.
