Eco-Friendly Festivals and Cultural Events

Eco-Friendly Music Festivals in the Czech Republic
The first sustainable festival to look forward to this year is the United Islands of Prague. This international multi-genre festival will take place from 1 May to 3 May 2025. The festival recognizes its influence and also considers its environmental footprint. The vision held by the organizers of the United Islands of Prague is to create an eco-conscious festival that adheres to fundamental principles of sustainability – economic, social, environmental, and cultural aspects. They prioritize green energy, vegan food options, waste-free packaging, carbon offset measures, and environmentally friendly travel. The event will utilize rainwater and feature compostable toilets. Efficient waste disposal, reusable cups, and partnerships with bike-sharing services are particularly important for this festival. Another remarkable event is Rock for People, which excels in many ecological initiatives. It was notably the first festival to introduce a hydrogen-powered stage, a solar stage, and energy-efficient lighting. This year’s edition of Rock for People will occur in Hradec Králové from 12 to 14 June 2025.
The organizers of Let it Roll continue their commitment to environmental initiatives with the Rollin’ Green project, which addresses the ecological impact of their events. Beyond just paper and plastic, recycling at the festival also includes metals, organic waste, and food waste at designated “green points”. Attendees will enjoy meals served on biodegradable plates made from palm leaves, and the utensils used are crafted from renewable resources and are compostable after use. This year’s festival runs from July 31 to August 3, 2025. Surprisingly, the Brutal Assault festival also takes its environmental responsibilities seriously. It pioneered a returnable cup system way back in 2012 and has made even more progress since then. Unique features include collaborations with Sea Shepherd and efforts to plant a forest. This year’s festival at Fort Josefov will take place from 6 to 9 August 2025.
A variety of other festivals are also participating in the Pure Festival initiative by Eco-Com. These festivals have a well-developed waste sorting and recycling system that is regarded as one of the best in the world. Clean festivals include Votvírák Milovice (19-22 June), Vysočina Fest (3-5 July), Colours of Ostrava (16-19 July), Benátská! S Impulzem (24 – 27 July), Chodrockfest (8 – 9 August), Vysmátý léto (21 June), and TurnOFF (21 – 24 August), along with many Majals.
Film Festivals, Theatre, and Sports Events
Another significant event in the Czech Republic is the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary, scheduled to take place from July 4 to 12, 2025. This festival is dedicated to decreasing the use of paper and plastic, actively sorts waste, and encourages PET hunters to clean up plastic from the streets. Attendees can also explore bike rides around the film locations in Karlovy Vary on Specialised bicycles. Fostering social initiatives has been a priority since 2000, showcased through the Cinema Without Barriers project, which is a key aspect of this festival. Additionally, the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, now in its 29th year, will take place from 24 October to 2 November 2025. This festival emphasizes vegetarian food options and sources its ingredients from local suppliers. It minimizes printed materials, promotes public transport, and bike-sharing, and plants a new tree each year.
The Summer Letná festival showcases new circus acts, theatre performances, music, and visual arts while also committing to environmental sustainability. Both locally and globally, it aims to protect and conserve natural resources in the bustling Letná area, which is synonymous with the festival’s identity. Find out how they are making an impact during the event running from 13 to 31 August 2025. Other notable sustainable events scheduled in the country include the Golden Trebuchet Ostrava sports event (24 June 2025), Prague Pride Festival (28 July – 3 August 2025), and the Designblok festival, showcasing products crafted from recyclable materials. The largest Czech design and fashion festival, Designblok, will take place from 7 to 12 October 2025.
