Czechs Favor Domestic Spring Getaways as Interest in Extended Weekends Rises

Shorter Holidays, More Emphasis on Quality and Comfort

The interest in celebrating the spring holiday season in Czechia remains steady compared to last year. On average, people plan to stay for six days, with nearly half (47%) opting for long weekends. Most Czechs prefer to spend their spring holidays with family or a partner. There’s a noticeable trend towards shorter stays, with travelers willing to spend more for quality accommodations and services.

František Reismüller, the Director of the Czech Tourist Authority – CzechTourism, shares, “Czechs are increasingly focused on comfort and unique experiences. They enjoy blending active recreation and relaxation with local gastronomy and culture. The popularity of wine trails, beer routes, and thematic culinary festivals is on the rise.” He also notes, “Currently, Czechia is collaborating with Michelin for three years, establishing itself as a culinary destination that the renowned company supports.”

Rest with Lighter Sporting Activities, Relaxation, and Culture

Almost a third of people surveyed want to spend their spring break actively. Just under 20% prefer passive relaxation, while 17% are interested in cultural sightseeing. Popular activities during this season include hiking (64%) and leisurely walks (53%). Family cycling (22%) and water sports (15%) are also favorites. Many respondents (46%) are inspired by tips and recommendations from friends and family, while 37% choose their destinations based on tourist attraction maps.

“Hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities for Czechs. It’s no surprise they want to holiday that way. We offer the best hiking signs in the world, with over 44,000 km of hiking trails and 40,000 km of cycling routes across the Czech Republic. Recent trends link active holidays with regional culture and gastronomy, and there’s also growing interest in spa and wellness stays,” adds Tereza Hofmanová, Director of the Management and B2B Cooperation Department of CzechTourism.

Czechs Willing to Spend More on Spring Holidays, Favoring Guesthouses

This year, planned spending per person during spring holidays has increased by CZK 545. Almost half of this budget will be allocated for accommodation. Czechs tend to prefer guesthouses (51%), higher-category hotels (27%), and free stays with friends or family (19%). When selecting their spring break stay in Czechia, respondents prioritize factors like price, personal experience, web information, and the quality and range of services.

Additional spending includes dining out in restaurants (18%) and cultural expenses such as tickets and museum visits (13%). Nearly a third of respondents plan to revisit familiar places, while almost half aim to explore locations they haven’t visited before. The most common mode of travel is by car or motorcycle (67%), with about 20% opting for train journeys. The younger generation (aged 18–34) is notably inclined to use public transport.

An interesting observation is that even in this digital age, visitors still prefer live guides at tourist sites, as less than one-fifth opt for audio guides. Older individuals, particularly those over 75, lean towards personal interactions, whereas mobile apps and audio guides are favored by those aged 40–49, summarizes Petr Janeček, head of the Institute of Tourism.

More Czechs Heading Abroad This Spring Compared to Last Year

Approximately 46% of Czechs are planning a spring holiday abroad, marking a 4 percentage point increase from last year. Travelers in the 30-39 age bracket are particularly inclined to go overseas (61%). For those not traveling abroad, most cite that they simply do not vacation outside the country this time of year (48%), with finances being the second most common reason (43%).
