Discover the beauty of the Czech Republic by bike

Ride the long-distance cycle routes and EuroVelo

A leisurely ride around the rivers

If you’re not a racing cyclist, you’ll appreciate the beautiful cycle paths along the rivers, which are easy and lead through beautiful countryside. Popular routes include the A1 to Karlštejn in Prague and the A2 from Modřany to Vraný. Another beautiful route crosses the area around the zoo and Stromovka on the way to Kralupy nad Vltavou.

The Elbe Trail is also worth checking out, covering almost 400 kilometres of winding routes in the Czech Republic through lowlands, valleys and historic towns. We particularly recommend the easier section from Kolín to Poděbrady and Nymburk, where you will pass by meadows and pools that smell of bear garlic in spring (for example, the Pňovský, Veltrubský or Libický meadow). Other parts of the route are also very beautiful and manageable, whether it is the section from Brandýs to Mělník or the Bohemian Central Highlands to Hřensko.

In the vicinity of České Budějovice there is a very popular cycle path to Hluboká and Purkarce, which runs along the Vltava Waterway. A nice, although more demanding trail, then continues along the Otava River from Šumava to Zvíkov. We must also not forget the famous Lake Trail around Lipno.

In Moravia, the cycle path around the Bata Canal and the Bečva “cycle highway” are very popular. You will certainly do well if you go to the Lednice-Valtice area or the Soutok Game Reserve near Breclav. Another new feature is the Belava cycle path, a route along the Bečva-Vlára-Váh river. The aim of this project is to create a continuous 50 km long cycle path linking the two border areas.

The most interesting thematic long-distance routes

If you are a keen cyclist and hills are not a problem for you, you should try the most interesting long-distance routes. Very popular are the wine cycling routes in South Moravia. Unlike other cycle paths , they don’t lead directly, but often wind through the countryside and connect places that have their own significance and charm for exploring South Moravia as a wine region. A very popular route is, for example, the Strážnice Wine Route.

For beer lovers, we recommend the Poddžbánsko Beer Cycle Trail, which takes you through the surroundings of the mist, and the Krkonoše Beer Trail, which connects four microbreweries. The Podorlická Beer Trail also offers three routes through the foothills of the Orlické Mountains, and in northern Moravia and Silesia you can discover the Radegast cycle path.

A large number of international long-distance routes pass through our territory, which you can complete not only in a weekend, but also in an entire holiday. These include, for example, the Greenway from Prague to Vienna or the Jizera Greenway, which runs from the Jizera Mountains to the confluence with the Elbe River. Similar routes are called Eurovelo. The Iron Curtain Trail (Eurovelo No. 13) connects 16 European countries along this line. In our territory, it runs from the Tri-Mezi near Aš through the Šumava and Palava rivers to the confluence of the Morava and Dyje rivers near Breclav.

The Trail in the Footsteps of Czech Kings, which connects Beroun with the castles of Točník, Karlštejn and Nižbor, will take you back in time. You can cycle along the Wallenstein Cycle Trail in the Czech-German border area from Cheb to Marktredwitz in Germany. The trail is named after the famous military leader Albrecht von Wallenstein, who was assassinated in Cheb in 1634. You can also take a bicycle trip back to the 17th century, to the time when the witch trials took place in Jeseniky and later in Šumperk. The Witches’ Cycle Route will take you across the Jeseníky Mountains.

Beautiful cycling routes in our mountains

If you cycle into the mountains, you will be rewarded with beautiful scenery. The Jizera Mountains are literally a cyclist’s paradise, especially in summer, when the cycle paths take you to the most beautiful corners of the region, as well as to its important sights. You can enjoy a nice trip along the Jizera 50 route or along the Jizera River. In the Giant Mountains, beware of the sections where you are not allowed to ride a bike. You can try the first cycling trail in the Krkonoše Mountains or the circuit around Rokytnice without any problems.

In the Orlické Mountains and Podorlice region, cyclists and inline skaters will enjoy the Orlické Cycling and Inline Skating Kingdom. This area is criss-crossed with a dense network of cycle paths and cycle tracks, so you will find the right one for you, whether you are a recreational or trained cyclist. The Royal Ridge Trail is very popular, starting in Sherlich and ending at Hanička Fortress.

In Bohemian Forest, be sure to try the Šumava Highway, which offers miles of endless forests and pastures through dozens of vanished settlements. This backbone cycle route is 163.5 km long and runs along both roads and purpose-built paths. You can go from Železná Ruda to Vyšší Brod.

In the Jeseníky Mountains, we recommend the YES Cyklo v Jeseníku cycling circuits. A total of 107 kilometres of marked Yescyklo cycling routes will take you mainly along the Sokol Ridge above the Jeseniky Spa and Český Vší, but they will also take you to the Zlatohorská vrchovina and below the Jeseníky ridges. If you are a fan of mountain bikes and enjoy riding along narrow hiking trails, then you will enjoy the Rychlebské trails and Lipovské trails – trails for mountain bikes designed to enjoy the unique landscape of the Rychlebské Mountains and the surroundings of Horní Lipová.

Finally, don’t forget the White Carpathians. In the south-eastern corner of our country, close to the Slovak border, you can ride beautiful singletrails and amazing mountain bike circuits in the Lučina recreation area. These routes will take you through the picturesque landscape of the White Carpathians and offer a purely natural cycling experience.
