What is the Purim holiday?
The festival of Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people during the time of the Persian Empire. On this day, Jews remember how they were saved from the evil vizier Haman, who plotted their total destruction on the 13th of Adar in the year 3405 (traditionally understood as 355 B.C.) when he sought to completely annihilate them. The term Purim comes from the practice of casting lots, which Haman used to select the ominous day for his planned massacre. During this holiday, the Book of Esther is read, fun carnivals are organized, and special treats known as Haman’s ears are served.
