Zip from Brno to Bratislava in Just One Hour!

The Czech Republic and Slovakia are on track to establish a high-speed railway connection, and officials from both nations are currently in talks to outline the specifics of the project.

As reported by iRozhlas, Slovakia has completed a feasibility study for a high-speed rail link that will connect Bratislava and the border with the Czech Republic. This study now awaits approval from local governing bodies.

On the Czech side, preparations have already been made with their documentation, which means that joint planning can commence without delay.

According to Miroslav Garaj, the director of the Strategy Department of Slovak Railways, “A completely new line will be developed starting from the Bratislava-západ station, designed to accommodate speeds between 300 to 400 km/h, which will link to the Czech Republic.” He shared this information in an interview with Radiožurnál.

Despite the progress in discussions, the actual completion of the railway is still a long way off.

“Given that this is an entirely new line, the preparation phase alone will take two to three years. We anticipate that the project will be finalized around 2029 or 2030, but actual construction is likely to start not before 2036 to 2040,” Garaj explained further.

The proposed high-speed rail will run from Brno to Břeclav and then proceed towards the border. The initial section is expected to begin construction in 2028, with the Railway Administration aiming for operational status by 2033.

This indicates that passengers could potentially board a high-speed train traveling between Brno and Ostrava within the next eight years. At Břeclav, the rail line will diverge, providing connections to both Austria and Slovakia.

The Czech government is also actively pursuing other high-speed rail initiatives.

According to iRozhlas, a line connecting Brno and Prague could be operational by 2036, with plans for an extension to Dresden to follow in 2040.
