Running Along the Rivers Toward Boundless Horizons

The rivers of Czechia offer a picturesque setting for an unforgettable running experience. The Elbe Trail, primarily utilized by cyclists, extends from the river’s source all the way to the stunning Bohemian Switzerland region. This trail provides long routes that are perfect for endurance runners, allowing you to explore areas such as the Krkonoše Mountains, the Polabí region, or North Bohemia. If you’re near České Budějovice in South Bohemia, you can enjoy a scenic 20 km route leading to Hluboká Castle and back along the Vltava River, featuring enchanting historic views and lovely, tree-lined paths. The majority of this route keeps you away from busy roads, allowing for a more tranquil running experience.

Challenging Mountain Trails: Tough Yet Rewarding

If you seek a more demanding running experience, venture into the mountains. The Brdy, České Středohoří, and Jeseníky Mountains are well-loved by Czech runners. Brdy stands out as a perfect choice for those wanting to engage with both unique terrains and rich history, as you’ll run through former military zones that were largely closed to the public during the 20th century.

In the Jeseníky Mountains, trails surrounding the Dlouhé Stráně pumped-storage reservoir are particularly popular among runners. This challenging route treats you to the stunning sight of an iconic water reservoir and spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Both the trails in Brdy and Jeseníky offer top-notch running surfaces, free from the crowd of tourists, making for a more pleasant running adventure.

Similarly, trails through the České Středohoří region are also less crowded, but brace yourself for some serious elevation changes! Although these mountains may not be the tallest, they certainly present plenty of inclines and beautiful steep slopes to conquer.

Historic City Centers: Running Amidst the Quiet

Would you like to see Brno, Olomouc, or Ostrava from a different perspective? Why not embark on an early morning run at sunrise! During this time, you’ll nearly have the city to yourself, meeting just a few morning enthusiasts while relishing the beauty of deserted streets.

Brno’s city center is ideal for both short and long runs. Consider heading toward Špilberk Castle, where a steep ascent awaits you; the stunning panoramic view of the city at the top will be your reward. Alternatively, if you prefer a flatter route, take a jog along Masarykova Street leading towards St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral and back to Lužánky—Czech’s oldest public park.

Olomouc features an enchanting historic center and lovely park paths perfect for a running excursion. Begin your morning near the Holy Trinity Column, jog through the Upper Square, and continue on to Bezruč Park, where you will find delightful running trails embraced by nature. If riverside running is more your style, consider the route along the Morava River towards Olomouc Castle and St. Wenceslas’ Cathedral.

Lastly, Ostrava might surprise you with its variety of running paths. We recommend a route starting from Dolní Vítkovice, a rejuvenated industrial complex that has evolved into a vibrant cultural destination, leading you toward Komenský Park. This park provides perfect conditions for a serene run along the Ostravice River, offering a refreshing green retreat right in the city’s heart.
